This month, we’re celebrating the successes of savvy expatriates and Singaporeans, as well as the setbacks they overcame, to make life better in Singapore in our Expatpreneur Awards 2017.
“Success is very subjective,” says Carolyn Law, who founded ARThaus in 2010 (and earned a master’s degree in fine arts at the same time!) – a culmination of her long-time dream to open an art studio and teach fine arts, drawing and painting.
“As a teacher, success is when you see your students start making paintings and selling them, holding exhibitions.”
What are the biggest challenges of running a business in Singapore? For Carolyn, it’s the “rental and rising cost of things. You are always at your landlord’s mercy,” she says.
Fortunately, she also says that owning ARThaus “doesn’t feel like a job” to her. She still looks forward to going to work everyday: instructing kids and adults, leading private classes and hosting art workshops and parties. “I enjoy and look forward to going to work every day – meeting new people from all walks of life and all over the world. ARThaus is a space where people gather, talk and share experiences.”
